Biography Summary
Professor Chimenos is currently a Full Professor in the field of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering at the Department of Materials Science and Physical Chemistry of the University of Barcelona. Since 1990, he has been a member of the Research Group on Design and Optimization of Processes and Materials (DIOPMA), serving as its director from 2015 to 2020. The research group was accredited by the Centre for Innovation and Business Development (CIDEM) of the Government of Catalonia as a technology and innovation transfer centre (TECNIO). In 2005, the group obtained accreditation as a consolidated research group, which it has maintained to date (2017 SGR 0118). Additionally, the group is a research centre affiliated with the Energy for Society R+D+I network (XRE4S), the Spanish Thematic Network on Thermal Energy Storage, the Ibero-American Network on Renewable Energies and Environmental Protection (RIbeERA), and the Inclusive, Resilient, Efficient, and Sustainable Cities Network (CIRES). Within the DIOPMA research group, Professor Chimenos is currently the principal investigator for projects in the area of Materials Recovery, Recycling, and Environmental Research.
His research primarily focuses on the study of alternative binder materials to Portland cement, the formulation of sustainable materials for construction, the reuse of magnesium by-products in environmental technology, and the characterization, stabilization, and reuse of waste generated in energy recovery plants from municipal solid waste. In these research areas, he has supervised eight doctoral theses, with four more currently in progress, as well as numerous undergraduate and master’s projects.
His research activity has resulted in more than 105 articles in indexed journals, 25 patents, and over 120 conference contributions. He has participated in numerous competitive research projects funded through international, national, and regional public resources, as well as in collaborative projects with private entities, in most of which he has served as the principal investigator.
