INNOVATION IN THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE
We research materials for thermal energy storage technologies to drive the transition to clean energies, enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability.
ENERGY FOR THE FUTURE
Currently, the global energy supply is a key concern for developed countries due to economically, environmentally, and socially unsustainable trends. Population growth and industrial development have increased energy consumption. For decades, renewable energy has lessened dependence on polluting sources, with energy storage emerging as a crucial catalyst for the transition to clean energies. Thermal Energy Storage (TES) allows for the storage of thermal energy for future use in heating, cooling, and power generation, classified into sensible, latent, and thermochemical types
SENSIBLE
STORAGE
At DIOPMA, we specialize in leading technologies for sensible thermal storage: molten salts, nanofluids, solid particle materials, and materials with elastocaloric effects. Our studies range from enhancing properties to assessing durability. Additionally, we focus on preventing corrosion in TES materials and studying industrial byproducts that promote a circular economy.
LATENT
STORAGE
We focus on latent heat storage using phase change materials (PCMs) optimized for high energy storage density. Our research is dedicated to developing innovative and sustainable PCMs, including microencapsulation, cascade PCMs, solid-solid transitions like organic-inorganic hybrid materials.
THERMOCHEMICAL
STORAGE
We study thermochemical heat storage, focusing on reversible heterogeneous gas-solid reactions that absorb and release heat. These technologies promise high energy density and long-term stability, making them ideal for industrial applications and energy sustainability.
TES NETWORKS
DIOPMA Centre is part of the Spanish network for thermal energy storage and InPath TES, aimed at fostering collaboration among Spanish TES research groups to elevate their international standing. The research within this network seeks to advance industrial and technological solutions, enhancing the societal recognition of TES applications.
