Thermal Energy Storage (TES) Materials and Energetic Sustainability Researcher.

Dr. Alejandro Calderón worked in technology development during more than 10 years before becoming a full-time researcher. During that time, he collaborated with different enterprises such as pharmaceuticals, construction firms, manufacturers, medical devices providers, environmental risk firms, among others.

Since 2014, he has been involved in solar energy, materials development and sustainability research. In particular his research has been focused in solar thermal Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) technologies by using solid particle material as Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF) and Thermal Energy Storage (TES) media. Experimental characterization of different materials has been performed focusing in the durability, cause by the high temperature exposure effect, of the materials during plant expected lifetime. In order to perform accelerated durability thermal tests, Dr. Calderon developed a special device for thermal cycling at high temperatures. Such device has already performed over 18,000 thermal cycles for different tested materials. In addition, several Bibliometric studies have been developed, in fields such as Thermal Energy Storage, Concentrating Solar Power, Thermochemail Energy Storage, Nanifluids, Additive Manufacturing, etc. In order to perform such studies, special methodology and programming was developed.

Dr. Calderon has been a Lecturer since 2015 for the UNIBA-Universidad de Barcelona Renewable Energy master degree program.

He also has been as master dissertation advisor and examiner in this program. In addition, he has been a Adjunct Professor at University of Barcelona between 2018 and 2022. Current research interests of Dr. Calderon are focused in high temperature thermal energy storage, solar thermal power generation, industrial solar thermal energy exploitation, circular economy material design and selection, and industrial heat recovery. Additionally, Dr. Calderon is currently participating in a project for contaminants detection at sea with the Department of Electronic and Biomedical of University of Barcelona.
